Imagine you have exactly one chance to give your team a single product compliance rule. No workshop. No 80 page PowerPoint presentation. No coffee compliance chat. Just one-golden-rule.
My choice?
👉 Always ask: “Are we really ALLOWED to sell this?”
Not: Do we want to? Not: Can we? But specifically: Are we really ALLOWED to?
Why this question ?
Because it automatically opens your eyes to what product compliance really means:
✅ Safety
✅ Responsibility
✅ Regulatory diligence
✅ Market access
And because it's so simple that it works even in the stress of everyday life.
The following cases occur all too often:
Case 1️⃣: The product is finished and suddenly someone remembers that it needs a CE mark. (Spoiler: When someone “suddenly remembers” something, it's always too late.)
Case 2️⃣: A new country is to be supplied and no one checks whether the packaging is permitted there.
Case 3️⃣: A supplier changes a component and the test mark disappears without anyone noticing.
The question “Are we really ALLOWED to sell this?” is like a compliance guard dog:
It doesn't bite, but it barks loudly.
It draws attention to itself.
It may not be convenient, but it's damn useful.
My tip for managers:
If you only want to introduce one compliance culture measure, make it this one. 🎯 Product compliance doesn't start in the legal department. It starts in the mind of every team member.
If you could only choose one rule to give your team or customers, what would it be? Feel free to include rules from other areas as well.
I look forward to hearing about your experiences and opinions 👇 ⌨️
